Human Needs

A popular understanding of human needs.  How many of these needs can be met by the economy?  How many can be met without the economy? How many of these needs are affected by the space around us?  Other models for human needs are not hierarchical.  Research shows that needs are often met in conjunction.






Here is the Chilean Economists’ Max-Neef’s set of human needs:


While, many or all of these needs may be common to all Americans, it is much more simple to work toward creating consumer goods for all Americans.  However, we increasingly have the sophistication in measuring and instruments toward manifesting multiple variables.  Some suggest a steady state economy, where needs are protected from the economy.  Others suggest a multi-tiered capitalism where creating consumer goods is no longer our ultimate end, but one of many.
